Paid communities in 2026: membership vs course vs hybrid

Membership, course, and hybrid are three promises, not three tiers of the same academy. Membership: you pay because Thursday's board still happens. Course: you pay for a task and a date, maybe a critique. Hybrid: recordings plus a room that has an end date, or a room that is a separate subscription. The usual disaster is a one-time payment that includes forever access to your head. That is a retainer you did not collect.

Pick one promise for 90 days. Do not pin Discord to a PDF and call it community. Chat without a kick is a leak. A leak is not a 2026 strategy.

Membership

Price is a filter. Failed cards are a large share of subscription churn (Recurly-style benchmarks often put involuntary churn in a big slice of losses). Dunning, grace, kick. Calendar: a slot that does not move, a 7-day task, a decision log. $9 rooms import tourists. A room that needs your critique cannot be a tip.

Annual 15–20% off after monthly works. Lifetime is how you close an old room, not how you open one.

Telegram for a signal. Discord for voice. A platform for the door. Europe: invoice, local currency. insy.io is a door with Stripe and an 8% take-rate. It is not the Wednesday.

Course

On-demand: dated recordings, tasks, no promise you will be there. Cohort: 4–6 weeks, 12 seats, critiques, an end. 6–10 lessons from the last 10 artefacts beat 40 hours of fear. A public URL of their work is the exam. A certificate is not.

If you have not done the work in months, do not teach it. Examples rot.

Hybrid without the lie

Honest: course plus 60–90 days of group, then the group dies or becomes a paid membership. Dishonest: forever chat in a one-time price. Buyers love it. You will not carry cohort three in the same room in month six. Separate rooms per cohort, or a hard end.

Do not open a $9 membership to "support" a course you have not validated. Validate with a file or 12 seats. Then a room with a job.

How to choose in 15 minutes

Do they need your head on their artefact? No: file. Yes, with a date: cohort. Yes, forever: membership, at a filter price, with a kick. Is the value in a file, a date, or a week? Same question as paywall versus one-time. Do not collect three answers.

Cold traffic sees the cheapest clear filter. Warm list may see the cohort. Membership is not a cold TikTok product unless you already have a media machine.

What 2026 actually changed (and what it did not)

Failed cards still kill rooms. Invoices in Europe still matter. Discord still does not know who paid. What changed: more creators copying Skool screenshots, more clippers in the same Discord as students, more "community" as a default add-on. The default add-on is how rooms die. A room needs a job. 2026 did not invent that. It made the unpaid leak more visible because everyone has a bot that fails on Sunday.

Mighty Networks averages and $48/month survey figures are not your price. Your price is hours backwards. Community memberships that are actual rooms often churn in a different band than content-feed subs. Until you have your own cohort data, plan tenure closer to half a year than a decade.

A hybrid calendar that does not eat the operator

Weeks 1–4: cohort tasks and Wednesday critiques. Weeks 5–8: same, plus a board if you can. Week 9: end. Week 10: mail — recordings here, room dies on date, membership at X if you want the board. Do not let week 10 be silent. Silence is how forever chat happens by accident.

If you cannot write week 10 before you launch, you are selling a membership at course price. Raise the price and call it membership, or add the end date.

Do not mix clippers and students and resellers in one $9 room

Different jobs. Different languages. A clipper wants a brief and a cap. A student wants a critique. A reseller wants a skip. One cheap room becomes a link dump. Price and job are the same tool. Use both.

Europe, again, because membership is a document every month

Cyclic invoices, retries, KSeF if you are in Poland and in scope, OSS if B2C digital crosses €10k EU-wide. A US campus PDF is not that document. The door is part of the membership promise. People do not renew when they are angry at billing. Billing anger is the stupidest churn. Fix the door before you add a fourth channel.

Membership that is actually a content feed

If the inside is only what you already post in public, you are selling a paywall on a feed. Feeds churn like subscriptions, not like rooms. Either put a board and critiques inside, or sell a file. Do not call a feed a community. 2026 is full of feeds with community in the title. They feel like a tax on fans. Fans leave. You keep the title.

A real membership can be small. 40 people at a filter price with a Thursday board beats 400 at $9 with 12 empty channels. Headcount is not the product. The job is.

Course that pretends to be a membership

Forever access to recordings is fine. Forever access to you is not, unless they pay monthly. Write it. If you hate writing it, you are about to lie. Liars get refunds in month two when the operator disappears into a second cohort. End dates protect both sides.

Hybrid scorecard after 90 days

How many finished the tasks. How many asked to stay. How many you can carry. Hours in. If hours hurt, the next hybrid has fewer seats or a shorter room or a file instead of critiques. If nobody asked to stay, do not open a membership to "save" the course. The course was the product. Let it end.

Pricing the three without copying Twitter

Membership: high enough to keep tourists out, low enough you still show up. Work backwards from hours. Course: defends the critiques, not the gigabytes. Hybrid: course price for the dated part; membership price for the room after. Do not hide two prices in one "everything". Everything is how operators burn.

A 48-hour 50% launch discount trains waiters. A seat cap trains a queue. Use the cap.

Ops stack that does not care which promise you picked

One checkout, one source of truth for paid/not, retries if recurring, invoices if Europe, kick, a place for the day-zero task. Discord or Telegram as a layer. insy.io if the door is the pain. Kajabi plus Discord plus a local payment link plus Excel is heroism at 15 and a second job at 80. 2026 does not reward heroism. It rewards Friday.

Do not redo a 10k case study you do not have

You do not need a revenue story to choose. You need a Wednesday. Hypothetical: 40 members at a mid price with a board can be a living room. 8 cohort seats at a higher price can be a workshop. A hybrid that never ends at a low price is a hostel. Hostels are loud. Workshops make the artefact. Pick the artefact or pick the board. Do not pick a hostel because a screenshot said 10k. Screenshots are not your calendar.

A 90-day pick, written so you cannot hide

Write one line: "For 90 days I am selling [file / cohort / membership]. The cadence is [none / Wednesday critique / Thursday board]. The end is [never because monthly / date]. The door is [tool]. Chat is [Discord/Telegram/native] and is not the cashier." Put it above the landing draft. If you cannot fill a field, you are not launching that product. You are launching a hope. Hope is a file at 97 if you must launch something. Hope is not a hybrid.

FAQ

Can you launch all three?

Technically. You will not carry three promises. File first.

Is Skool a membership or a course?

It is a campus. You still choose the promise. The roof does not choose it.

Should a course include a free month of membership?

Only if the membership already exists and has a job. As a way to start a membership, it imports tourists from the course into a room with no cadence. End the course. Offer the room separately.

What if buyers only want "access to you"?

That is mentoring or a filter-priced membership, not a $9 community. Price the head. Cap the seats. Do not hide the head in a hybrid ZIP.

Telegram membership versus campus?

Signal: Telegram plus a door. Modules: campus or lessons plus a door. Do not build both for five people.

Closer

Wednesday or a date or a file. One. 90 days. Door and invoice together. Chat can be a layer. Chat is not the cashier. 2026 did not change that. It made failed cards and invoices more expensive to ignore. Ignore them and the hybrid dies. Honour them and any of the three can live. Pick one. Write the promise in a sentence. Put the price in the sentence. Stop adding Discord to PDFs. If you still want all three because "that's how it works in 2026", 2026 is full of dead hybrids. Dead hybrids had three promises and one exhausted operator. Live rooms had one promise and a kick. Live courses had a date. Live files had no chat. Be live. Be one. Ninety days. Then add a second promise as a next step for people who finished the first, not as a cold landing. Cold landings get one sentence. One sentence cannot hold three promises. That is the whole decision. Membership is Wednesday. Course is a date. Hybrid is a date plus a later Wednesday, paid again. Paid again is the point. Forever in a one-time price is the hole. Close the hole. Open one door. Put an invoice on it. Show up or end. Those are the only two honest memberships. Showing up without ending is a subscription. Ending without showing up is a course. Both are fine. Lying is not. 2026 is unkind to the lie. Be kind to Friday. Pick. Then do not reopen the document for 90 days to add a second promise. Second promises are how hybrids get fat. Fat hybrids die. Thin memberships live. Thin courses end on time. Thin files have no Slack. You wanted 2026 to be the year of community. Let it be the year of one promise that survives Friday. Friday is kick and invoice and a board that actually went out. If the board did not go out, you did not have a membership. You had a course you were afraid to date. Date it. Or show up. Not both for the price of a PDF. PDF price is for PDFs. Head price is for heads. Room price is for rooms. Three prices, three products, three 90-day windows if you ever get there. Window one is now. Now is one. One is enough to learn. Learning is the point of 90 days. 90 days of three promises is not learning. It is noise. Noise looks like a campus. Campuses screenshot well. Fridays do not screenshot. Build for Friday. Membership, course, or hybrid with an end. Write the line. Launch the line. Do not launch the campus. The campus can wait until the line is boring. Boring is the 2026 win condition for a paid room. Win that. Then talk about hybrid. Hybrid is a sequel. Sequels need a first film. First film is one promise. Action is the sentence on the card, the price in the sentence, and the door that kicks. Card. Sentence. Door. Ninety days. Then you may earn a sequel. Not before. Before is one film. Shoot one promise. Leave the trilogy for year two, when Friday is already boring.
